Data before models: why a uniform schema beats a smarter AI

Most AI disappointments in engineering are data problems. Before choosing a model, fix the library it reads from.

Most AI disappointments in engineering are data problems.

When an assistant searches a firm's information it should find an indexed library, not a scavenger hunt. Project knowledge is usually scattered across models, documents, email and meeting minutes, all in different formats and named by different conventions. No model, however capable, can reason reliably over that.

Four habits that make AI useful

  • Uniform data schema. Chain automation tools to one consistent company data structure.
  • Centralised design data. Store data in databases, indexed by project and model, and track every change.
  • Correlation is key. When models, documents and decisions speak the same language, AI can connect them instead of guessing.
  • Human in the loop. Validation belongs to engineers and architects. Human approval is mandatory and cannot be skipped.

The order matters. Firms that start with the model and leave the data for later end up with impressive demonstrations and unreliable answers. Firms that start with the data find that even a modest model becomes genuinely useful, and every answer can be traced back to its source.

Turn project-specific guesswork into a reliable, automated engine.
